Tajikistan media online: news sites, newspapers, radio and TV
A guide to Tajikistan media websites: news portals and agencies, newspapers and magazines, radio stations and TV channels, and what you can read, hear and watch on them.
Many Tajik media outlets work beyond print and broadcast: newspapers, radio stations and TV channels run websites where you can read news, listen to live streams and watch video. Below is a selection of such sites, grouped by type of outlet. The order of the list is not a ranking.
News sites and news agencies
If you want a running feed of events, start with general news resources. AVESTA.TJ is a news agency publishing news from Tajikistan and neighbouring countries on politics, security, the economy, society and culture, with some content available in several languages. NOVOSTI.TJ covers Tajikistan, Central Asia and the world, with separate coverage of sport and migration. Pressa.tj covers politics, the economy, law, migrants' lives and culture, and runs a section on successful Tajiks.
The official agenda is easy to follow on the site of Khovar, the national information agency of Tajikistan, which publishes news of Tajikistan and the world in Tajik, Russian, English, Arabic and Persian, plus exchange rates. The Nezavisimoe Mnenie news agency runs a news feed on politics, society, the economy, sport, incidents, culture and science. The media company Vecherka (Vecherny Dushanbe LLC) publishes news, analysis, interviews, reports and special projects about Dushanbe and Tajikistan. The Tajik service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radioi Ozodi, produces news, reports, analysis, photos and video on Tajikistan, Central Asia and the world, including migration.
Bilingual resources suit readers who use both Russian and Tajik:
- Dialog. Tajikistan and the World — society, politics, culture, the economy and world events, with analysis, videos and photos;
- Khabari Khush — news from Tajikistan, the CIS and the world, the economy, culture and arts, sport and lifestyle;
- ImruzNews — the country's and Central Asia's top news, international relations, articles and tender information;
- SSSR — politics, the economy, culture, sport, education, press reviews, analysis and an archive.
Readers who prefer Tajik can turn to Ruzgor, an independent socio-political site with daily news, reports, interviews and analysis, and to Javononi Tojikiston, which besides politics and the economy carries material on youth, sport and tourism, along with videos and a library section.
The media project YOUR.TJ tells the story of Tajikistan through news, stories about people, traditions and customs, podcasts and event listings in Russian and Tajik. And if you doubt whether a news item is accurate, check Factcheck.TJ, a fact-checking platform aimed at countering fake news that publishes fact-check articles with verdicts, along with its methodology and verification tools.
Newspapers, magazines and cultural portals
The official publication of the Republic of Tajikistan is the daily newspaper Jumhuriyat, covering politics, the economy, social affairs, energy, law, science and education. Sadoi Mardum is the newspaper of the Majlisi Oli: its site carries coverage of the President and parliament, the texts of laws and PDF editions of the paper. The local agenda is represented by Nabzi Fayzobod, the website of the People's Deputies Assembly and the chairman of Fayzobod district, with news on society, agriculture, law, education and healthcare.
Specialist publications are useful when you are looking not for a news feed but for material on one subject:
- Omuzgor — a publication on education, from preschool to higher education, science, innovation and regulations;
- Gundishopur — a scholarly, philosophical and cultural portal with articles, translations, books and search by author.
Television online
TV channel websites offer news and programme information, and some also stream live. Television of Tajikistan publishes news on politics, the economy, industry and agriculture, TV films and satellite broadcast parameters. Jahonnamo offers the latest news and a live stream. The site of the state channel Safina carries news, video features and concerts. Bahoriston is television for children and teenagers, with broadcast announcements and the channel's projects. The state science and nature channel Ilm va Tabiat features its programmes, videos, a live stream and the broadcast schedule on its site, along with information on national contests. Sports fans will find the site of the sports channel Varzish useful, with its broadcast schedule and sports news.
Radio and podcasts
Asia-Plus Radio broadcasts music and news around the clock in Dushanbe on 107.0 FM, and its site lets you listen online. Radio Navo on 96.5 FM presents its programmes, podcasts and music on its site. Hamsado broadcasts on 94.5 FM and offers news, music, TV and podcasts on its site. Shahri Man offers a live stream, programme schedule, playlist, events guide and a mobile app. On the site of Radio Vatan you can listen online, read news and learn about advertising on air.
Other radio stations have websites too. Farhang Radio publishes the latest news and material on culture, health and the activities of the President and Parliament. Sadoi Dushanbe covers news from Tajikistan and the capital, from politics and the economy to culture, tourism and sport. The site of Diyor Radio currently provides only the station's contact details. The personal-story format is represented by the podcast Rūzi Yakum, in which guests talk about overcoming difficulties, personal growth and the road to success.
Related sections
Some outlets now belong to other sections of the catalog. Literary and heritage magazines such as Adabiyot va San'at are collected in the Culture, arts & music section; see the review. Scientific journals such as Sino are in Science & research (review). The football channel TV Football has moved to Sports & fitness (review), and family publications to Family & kids (review).
How to choose
First decide what you need: a fast news feed, official documents, specialist analysis or a live broadcast. Then look at the site's language — some outlets publish only in Tajik, others in two languages — and at whether there is an archive if you are looking for older material. All sites in this category are in the catalog.tj catalog.
